A fence is a line of posts, and the posts are everything
Anyone can screw palings to a rail. What makes a fence stay straight, stay upright in a Hawke's Bay nor'wester and stay shut at the gate is the posts: how deep they go, how well they are concreted, and whether the line was set out properly in the first place. That is the part we care about, and it is why we do the concrete ourselves rather than leaving it to whoever is free that day.
Boundary and privacy fencing
Full-height timber paling and panel fences for the boundary, and the privacy fences and screens that stop the neighbours looking straight into the living room. Set out on the boundary line, with the gates where you actually walk and drive.
Composite panel fencing
Wood-grain composite slat and panel fencing is a lot of what we are asked for now: it looks like timber, it never needs painting or staining, and it does not warp or rot. It costs more than pine up front and considerably less over its life. We build it on steel or timber posts set in concrete, with the panels sitting on a concrete plinth where the ground wants one.
Timber fencing
Treated pine paling, batten and board, horizontal slat and post-and-rail, in whatever profile and height suits the house. Stained, painted or left to weather.
Retaining and fencing together
A lot of fences sit on a change in level. Where the fence needs a retaining wall under it, or a plinth to hold the garden back, we do that as one job - see landscaping and hardscaping - so the wall and the fence are built to the same line rather than fighting each other.

Set out the line
Boundary pegs, string line, gate positions and any change in ground level, agreed with you before a hole is dug.

Posts in concrete
Holes to the right depth for the height of the fence and the ground, posts plumbed and braced, concreted, and left to cure before the panels go on.

Rails, panels and gates
Rails or panels fixed level and straight, gates hung so they swing clear and latch shut, and the site left tidy.

Fencing Questions
Timber or composite?
Timber is cheaper to build and looks right on most houses, but wants staining or painting every few years. Composite costs more on the day, needs no coating, and does not rot, warp or fade the way timber does. If you never want to think about the fence again, composite. If the budget is tight, timber.
How high can a boundary fence be?
Fences up to 2 metres high on a boundary generally do not need a building consent, though your district plan may have its own limits, especially on a road frontage. We will check what applies to your site before we quote.
Do you take the old fence away?
Yes. Pulling out the old fence and posts, and dealing with the old concrete footings, is part of the quote. It is usually the least fun part of the job, which is why people are glad to hand it over.
