Landscaping

Gardens, pergolas and hardscaping - retaining walls, paths, edging and the ground work that turns a section into somewhere you want to be. Hastings, Napier and across Hawke's Bay.

The bits between the house and the fence

Landscaping is the word for everything outside that is not the house: the retaining wall holding the bank back, the path to the front door, the pergola over the patio, the garden beds and the lawn. Done as one job, with the levels and the drainage worked out first, it is what makes a section feel finished. Done piece by piece over five years, it usually never quite does.

Hardscaping

This is our side of landscaping and where we spend most of our time. Timber sleeper and post retaining walls, concrete and block walls, paths and steps, edging, garden borders, gravel areas and the concrete patios and pool surrounds that anchor an outdoor space. It is heavy, precise work, and it is the part that has to be right before any planting goes in.

Pergolas and outdoor structures

Pergolas, shade structures and outdoor rooms over a patio or a deck, built on proper footings and sized to the space. A pergola turns a slab into a place you sit in January, and it is a lot easier to build when the concrete underneath it was poured with it in mind - see decks and residential concrete.

Gardens and ground work

Section clearing, levelling, topsoil, garden bed preparation, drainage and lawn preparation. The unglamorous digging that decides whether the garden drains or drowns. Planting and lawn we can do as part of a whole-yard job.

Retaining walls

Timber sleeper walls, post-and-rail walls and concrete walls to hold a bank, level a section or make a terrace. Built with the drainage behind them that keeps them standing, and where the height means a consent or an engineer is needed, we will tell you before we start rather than after.

Whole-yard projects

The job we like best is the whole backyard in one go: retaining wall, patio, deck, fence, pergola and garden, planned together and built in the right order by the same crew. It costs less than doing it in pieces, it takes less time, and the result looks like it was meant to be that way. Ring 027 375 7749 or send us an enquiry with a description of the space and what you would like it to be.

Questions

Landscaping Questions

Do you do the design as well?

For most residential jobs we work from a walk around the section with you, a sketch and a conversation about how you want to use the space. If you already have a plan from a landscape designer we will build to it. For a big or complicated site we may suggest getting a design done first.

How high can a retaining wall be before it needs a consent?

Generally a retaining wall up to 1.5 metres that is not carrying a load from above, like a building or a driveway, does not need a building consent. Higher than that, or with a load on it, it does and usually needs an engineer. We will check your situation before quoting.

Can you do just the hard landscaping and leave the planting to me?

Yes, and plenty of people do exactly that. We do the walls, paths, concrete, edging and ground preparation, and hand over a section that is ready to plant.
